Nestled in downtown Kalamazoo, the State Theater hosts a variety of
cultural events to residents and visitors alike, assuming they are able
to get there in one piece! Parking is usually available in any of
the lots in the surrounding area, but it doesn't hurt to show up a little
early because between fighting the one-way streets and competing for parking,
you really don't want to miss your show here.
Once inside, visitors are presented with a classic view of the old-style
theater, just don't stand there too long because there are fifteen people
waiting behind you to get inside! Honestly, the lobby/foyer/concession
stand area is extremely small here, so hopefully you've either got
a lot of patience or brought a companion who does. Luckily, the performance
isn't in the lobby...
The theater itself is actually old enough that it was built during the
times of actual stage shows, so it looks just like all of the theaters
you've seen in the movies, complete with a balcony and all! The floor
only cycles through the alphabet once, so the worst seats are still less
than 100 feet from the stage. Additional seating is available in
the balcony, but who really wants to sit that far away??? Possibly
best of all, however, are the actual seats themselves, believe it or not!
As this is a very old facility, the seats were designed to be comfortable
for many hours on end, which translates to mucho padding, reclinability
and most importantly guys, arm room! Not even Saskwatch would have
to worry about bumpin' elbows here...
The theater books both musicians and speakers alike, although unfortunately
music and other parties seem to dominate the schedule nowadays. Nevertheless,
comedians to appear on the bill from time to time and always put on a good
show!
