NBC to Air New Reality Program: "The News"
as reported by: Gene Doucette

BURBANK, Calif. (Just Laugh) - NBC announced today its plans to air a new reality TV program tentatively called "The News." Described as "similar in scope to other reality shows," The News will show real people in real situations around the world. "We'll offer stories that reflect the best aspects of other reality shows," said creator Neil Shapiro. "For example, one night we might visit an impoverished nation and see how the people there survive, much like Survivor. Another night, a government report may resemble The Mole, or possibly Joe Millionaire."

Shapiro also expects to attract viewers of non-reality shows, such as The West Wing, Law and Order, or CSI. "The difference being," he said, "we'll be dealing with real-life crimes, murders, and politics. If we're lucky, one single episode could comprise all three. The possibilities are endless."

Asked about casting requirements, Shapiro said "the only casting we're doing right now is for the 'news anchor and the 'reporters'. Otherwise, if you want to appear on The News, you're going to have to either commit a major crime or be a world leader of some sort. Both would be great."

TV Guide critic Matt Roush, admitting the idea was "innovative," didn't give "The News" much of a chance to succeed. "Just from a strategic standpoint, the production costs would have to be huge. Plus, the one thing all good reality shows have is artificial challenges in controlled environments involving moderately attractive people. I think The News is going to miss out on all three of those factors. Best-case scenario is it develops a cult following, but I just don't think NBC has enough patience to give it a chance to build one."

Asked to comment, Shapiro said "give it a chance first. And keep in mind that flexibility is our biggest strength. For example, an all-celebrity News episode is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility."
